Like I said in the post, I've had someone buy me a bus ticket before when things were difficult (I couldn't speak Farsi, so I couldn't tell them where I wanted to go). That was a very positive experience.

Besides, and more importantly, when you're travelling you _need_ to trust people to a certain extent, especially in places where you don't speak the language. The alternative is to have a very dull travel experience.

Re: The Nicaragua incident - echo "hey, it works" > /dev/null

Oops, I got that round the wrong way ... I was pretty sure they _weren't_ going to kill us. Fixed.

Re: The Nicaragua incident - echo "hey, it works" > /dev/null

Hey Michael, next time a friendly limpy that you've never seen before comes along offering to pay for you and your girl's friend taxi take preventive measures like giving him a strong "'patada en el culo", before saying good bye.
At least nothing really bad happened to you guys.
L.A..
Managua

Re: The Nicaragua incident - echo "hey, it works" > /dev/null

Christ - that is truly horrendous. I just had to re-read it for a second time to take it all in.

So many ifs but and maybes but I guess you were both just thankful to get away physically (if not mentally) unharmed.

I can only think what the sense of impending doom was like as the horrendous saga unfolded and how terrifying it was to have a knife held to you. Let alone, thinking about your partner.

As for the final drive down the dirt track, I would have favoured the latter and been completely delirious.

I've never done backpacking or visited such lesser known places but, I don't think you were that stupid or naive.

I can perfectly understand how it sounded plausible because they had planned it all. In fact, makes you wonder if they regularly pull the same stunt on unsuspecting tourists.
