So many ifs but and maybes but I guess you were both just thankful to get away physically (if not mentally) unharmed.
I can only think what the sense of impending doom was like as the horrendous saga unfolded and how terrifying it was to have a knife held to you. Let alone, thinking about your partner.
As for the final drive down the dirt track, I would have favoured the latter and been completely delirious.
I've never done backpacking or visited such lesser known places but, I don't think you were that stupid or naive.
I can perfectly understand how it sounded plausible because they had planned it all. In fact, makes you wonder if they regularly pull the same stunt on unsuspecting tourists.
At least nothing really bad happened to you guys.

Besides, and more importantly, when you're travelling you _need_ to trust people to a certain extent, especially in places where you don't speak the language. The alternative is to have a very dull travel experience.
